Mada (Qatar Assistive Technology Center) is a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting people with disabilities to the world of information and communication technology. Mada was established by the Supreme Council for Information and Communication Technology (ictQatar) in June 2010 as a public private partnership with Qtel, Vodafone Qatar, Qatar National Bank, and Microsoft.
The Center is a proactive response to the belief that ICT can play a critical role in improving the quality of life for people with disabilities. Opening a virtual door onto a world of information and opportunities provides a powerful tool to disabled people who are continuously overcoming social and economic barriers. By placing assistive technologies in classrooms, workplaces, and homes throughout Qatar, people with disabilities will be able to work, attend class, or connect with peers from around the world.
Every day, the Mada team works closely with disabled people, caregivers, and professionals by providing expert advice and assessment on a wide variety of Assistive Technologies that cater to persons with physical, hearing, visual, and learning disabilities. The Center also provides technology through a Universal Loan Program, where disabled citizens and residents of Qatar can be provided with different access technologies based on their needs and abilities. The provision of technology is also bolstered by an intensive Training program that is available throughout the year.
Mada’s vision of connecting disabled people to the world of ICT also encompasses a commitment to encouraging the development of Assistive Technologies in the Arabic language. The Mada Research and Development department works closely with Assistive Technology manufacturers from around the world to produce localized versions of their products. These Arabic language versions provide a much needed resource for disabled people in Qatar, and beyond.
Mada also recognizes the importance of creating accessible content, which would allow users of Assistive Technology to access websites and digital platforms in a barrier free manner. By working with web developers and content managers throughout Qatar, the Mada e-Accessibility team is changing the digital ecosystem of Qatar, ensuring that it will be accessible to all.
